It is with great honor that I have been able to share memorable moments with Malik. He took me under his wing and made sure that I always had a share with the team and with his loved ones. He treated me like a little sister and protected me like one. I am deeply pained to have to lose such a loving person. His wisdom was insurmountable, and when he didn't know something he would obtain the information. Man, I will truly miss his compassion, energy, laugh, jokes, and everything else. Michael always made people feel welcome and that's what I will always cherish in my heart.

I know that the void that I feel is not only felt by me, there are many who loved and adored Malik, but I am thankful that I was given the opportunity to work with his family in life and his passing. Thank you Michelle for the talks that we had. You also have served to mentor me as well. I appreciate the wisdom that you expounded to me. Gigi and Desmond, your youthful energy always lifts my spirit when I see you. Sheena, your wit always made me laugh. God bless you all.

I have yet to face the fact that my uncle is gone. The distance between us had left me without a final goodbye and my brain just can't process it at all. I wish with all my heart I could be by your side for one last hug and kiss. I am so proud of the man and role model you had become. My heart is overjoyed you got to hold my son and I will cherish that always. We needed MORE TIME. I pray you are holding grandma's hand and looking down on us all proud of what you see. I will always love you uncle Mike.

Malik always called me brother..... but treated me like his son. Whenever I called, he showed up. In 3 short years myself and the members of True 2 Life became true brothers with Malik. We've cried together, argued but the love was never compromised. Malik was 1 if not the Realest, Most honest (brutally) honest and giving men I've ever met. I've spent a lot of time with him these past 3 years, I will cherish all the memories, laughs and moments we shared. I Thank God he put Malik in my life. I am better because of it. Condolences to his entire Family. His wife Michelle, the Entire Hines family, Santiago family and his 2 grandchildren whom he Loved to Life!! #mikehinesforever #kingmalik

Mike
I just wanted to say that it was a pleasure knowing you.We met when our grandson "Desmond" came into this world. We shared your company when we celebrated our Desmond's birthday and you and Sheena taught me about the "salad bar at Chucky Cheese" Since the day of your untimely passing, I learned what an awesome man you were. You spent your lifetime helping young men in need of guidance within the community. There are not many men that would do that great of a deed. Just know that Eric and I will always make sure your legacies Desmond and Gianna are OK. I am confident that Desmond will grow up to know that his grandfather Michael Hines loved him beyond measure and how loved you were throughout Staten Island.

My heart goes out to his wife and daughter and grandchildren and family.
Chaplain Hines and I have crossed paths twice in this life time as friends.
Our last conversation was helped me with my bible studies and asked me for advice on getting marry. We pray, laugh, and cry and even ministered to the youth together from time to time.
He talked about his wife and daughter and grandchildren, family members so much that I feel like they are my family too. Chaplain Hines has left a legacy behind that maybe his family can continue doing the community works in his memory. Rest in eternal peace much love Chaplain Gonzalez-Lee.

Praying for healing for my family

When Great Trees Fall

When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.

When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.

When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.

Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.

And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

~Maya Angelou

To our Brother Minister Malik Michael Hines Bey
Give glad tidings to those who patiently endure, who say when afflicted with a calamity: "To Allah we belong and to Him we return." They are those on whom (descend) blessings and mercy from their Lord, and they are the ones who receive guidance." (Qur'an Surah Baqarah; 2:155-157)

"Every soul shall have a taste of death and only on the Day of the Judgement shall you be paid your full recompense. Only those who are saved from the fire and admitted to Paradise (Jannah) will have attained the object (of life). For the life of this world is but good and chattels of deception." (Qur'an Surah Imran; 3:185)

So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;
44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

It is with a heavy heart that I offer condolences to the family of Michael Hines. It was an honor to serve with him in the fight against street violence on Staten Island. We mourn his passing.
