Shavon April Odom, the oldest of twelve children, was born on November 28, 1981, in Brooklyn, NY. From an early age, Shavon showed a fierce independence and determination and AT the age of 16, ready to take life head-on, she left her hometown and joined Job Corps. Soon after, she enlisted in the U.S. Army, where she served for 20 years. Her service took her around the world, where she forged lifelong friendships and gained a deep appreciation for different cultures and places. Yet, no matter how far she traveled, Shavon always found her way back home.
A proud combat veteran, Shavon served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. She was not only a soldier but also a creator and a builder. A passionate DIYer, she took pride in building tables and chairs with her own hands. Her creative spirit extended to music, where she made her own beats, and to poetry, where her words reflected her depth and wisdom. Shavon’s eclectic taste in music spanned from Gospel and R&B to Rock, and she could always find the right song for any moment.
Shavon was witty and playful, with a sharp sense of humor, but she also stood firmly for herself and those she loved. After retiring from the Army, she channeled her drive into entrepreneurship, becoming a successful business owner. Always seeking growth, she returned to school, where she discovered a new passion for debate, using her voice to challenge and inspire.
Shavon leaves behind her mother Paulette; her sisters Rebecca, Racheal, Joanna, Kasandra, Michelle, and Joia;
her brothers Pernell, Henry, Danny, Gregory, Michael, and Joshua; her NIECES AMIYAH, KORI, KAYLA, AND AUHLANI; HER NEPHEWS BRIAN, ELIJAH, DAVID, CHRISTOPHER, PERNELL JR., OmARI, CORTEZ, XAVIER, AND DARNELL; AND HER STEP-FATHER HENRY.
Shavon’s strength, creativity, and unwavering love for her family and friends defined her life. She lived boldly, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. WE LOVE YOU SHAVON.
