And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. (Hebrews 13:16 NIV)
Scherisce Monique Lewis Clinton (Sherri), the eldest daughter of the late Gregory White (Gamel) and Mary M. Lewis (Honey), was born on April 29, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York. She transitioned peacefully in her sleep after a long illness on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at her home in Staten Island, New York.
Sherri received her education through the New York City Public School System and would eventually earn her high school diploma and take online college courses. She always dreamed big.
Sherri was raised with her two brothers and sister in Brooklyn and Staten Island after the death of their mother in 1977. While she was only seven years old, she instinctively knew she had adult responsibilities. Sherri understood her role as the oldest daughter and granddaughter. With the help and influence of her grandmothers, Celia Cromwell and the late Nafesha Williams (Umie), she became the caregiver for her younger siblings and cousins. Having these responsibilities positioned Sherri to pursue her passion for cooking and serving her community.
Being “Lewis Strong” and keeping her faith were what Sherri drew upon for strength as she battled kidney disease and dialysis 3 times a week. With these health challenges, she promoted kidney disease awareness through fundraising and participating in the annual National Kidney Foundation - Kidney Walk.
Being a mother to Shanee and Ivyuanah brought her pride and reasons to keep pushing and making her dreams a reality.
Sherri would also find love when she met Ernest Clinton. The two connected and would eventually tie the knot on July 15, 2011. They shared many great memories and recently became entrepreneurs. Ernest opened an apparel store and Sherri realized her dream of opening a restaurant, Sherri’s Kitchen. In January 2022, Sherri’s Kitchen was featured in silive.com’s review, “5 new noshes to try this month in Staten Island. Wow, they’re good!”
Sherri served on the board of the New York City Housing Authority’s South Beach Houses Tenants’ Association starting in 1994 and then she would take over as President in 2002. She held this position with honor until she passed away. As President, she worked tirelessly to make sure the residents received quality housing as well as productive and engaging programs. Sherri also partnered with various organizations to feed the homeless. Sherri was recently recognized as one of Staten Island’s Heroes for her tireless efforts during the pandemic.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Milton Jerome Lewis (Mel).
Sherri leaves a legacy of strength, compassion and love in the hearts of those whose lives she touched, her husband, Ernest Clinton; daughters Shanee Monique Mary Lewis and Ivyuanah Keshe Marcus; stepchildren Kevin Clinton, I’sha Clinton, Shameek Clinton and Eternity Clinton; sisters Amel Delores Lewis and Latonya Brownly; brothers Gregory Allen Lewis (Atlanta, GA) and Christopher Lamb, grandmother Celia Cromwell; aunts Elizabeth Brisbane (Charleston, SC) and Alieah Ismail (Philadelphia, PA); uncles Jerome Cromwell, Zaid Ismail, and Ahmed Ismail (Philadelphia, PA); Justice Marcus (Ivyuanah’s father); fur babies, Mocha and Damu; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
