Rory Louise (Coleman) Howell was born on July 18, 1956, in Mt. Vernon, NY, to Ruth Charlotte (Glover) Coleman and James Ennis Coleman. She was the sixth of their ten children and the last to be born in Mt. Vernon. Rory departed this earth on July 13, 2024.
The Coleman family moved to Brooklyn, NY, in 1959, where Rory spent most of her formative years. She was baptized at an early age at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church on Bushwick Avenue in Brooklyn and graduated from Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School in 1975. After graduating, Rory worked various jobs throughout her career, including several years at Amnesty International.
On Valentine’s Day, 1976, Rory married the love of her life, Willis Anthony Howell Sr. (Willie). From their union, four children were born: Nakia, Kym, Vaughan, and Willis. While their children were still young, Rory and Willie moved their family to Staten Island, where Rory would live for the rest of her days.
Rory was a talented cook, following her mother’s tradition of baking cinnamon rolls, among other dishes. She and Willie cherished their children, and Rory's nurturing nature shone through in every meal she cooked and every story she told. Family was everything to her. The Joy her grandchildren brought to her life was unparalleled. Rory was blessed with seven grandchildren: twins Kingston Melvin and Vaughan Anthony Howell, Joi Nachelle Madison Spears, brothers Darrius Mathew Anthony and David Damari Dillon King, and sisters Josie Ruth and Kaylee Mae Howell. She proudly shared stories about her grandchildren with anyone who would listen. She loved reading books , listening to Frankly Beverly and Maze, and going on many weekend trips with her Family to Atlantic City!
Rory leaves behind to mourn her loss her four children: Nakia-Howell Spears, Kym Howell-King, Vaughan Willis Howell, and Willis Anthony Howell; her son-in-law Dorian King and daughters-in-law Melyne Howell and Kimberly Mae Howell; and seven grandchildren: Kingston, Vaughan, Joi, Darrius, David, Josie, and Kaylee. She is also survived by one uncle, James and one aunt, Ethel (Sissy) her sisters Linda Sharon and Toni Marie Darlene, brothers Robert James, Lawrence Thor, James Ennis Jr., and Eric Scott, 23 nieces and nephews, numerous great-nieces and nephews, several great-great-nieces and nephews, and many cousins, friends, and acquaintances.
