Monica Dupree Gotay was born on June 8th, 1972, in Staten Island, New York. She was the eldest of 9 children.

Not long after her own start, Monica gained the title of “Big Sister” to Marsha Gotay. This was a title that she held close to her heart. From the beginning and to her end, Monica loved Marsha with a deep and sacred conviction that only a big sister could have.

Monica was blessed to have been loved and cared for by Renee Bell and Robert Lee Alexander Sr. Together, they lovingly opened their home to Monica and Marsha raising them alongside Charnae, Robert Lee III, Chanoa, Sterling and Sheldon, all of whom Monica loved and cherished as her siblings and family.

In October of 1990, Monica gave birth to her first child, Edward and in the years that followed she would give life to Desiree, Jason, Thaddeus, and Samaria. Her five children inherited her artistic abilities, sense of humor, and her love of singing. Monica loved her children and was proud of their gifts and strengths. As is with most parents, it was the strongest desire of her life that they would grow to be more and better than herself. With bittersweet pride, she would boast that Eddie and Desiree were doing their very best to be active and present parents to their own children. She was proud to witness Jason and Samaria being consistent in their work while making strides to better their lives and she was so hopeful with the boundless possibilities that lay ahead for her youngest son Thaddeus. All of her children have an incredibly bright, beautiful and dynamic presence that reflects the best parts of Monica. They are her greatest contribution to this life, and she knew that.

Monica admittedly had her struggles. Her journey was not an easy one, but along the way she found laughter and joy in the people she loved. She was known to bring a smile to strangers by saying “Hello Beautiful Queen!” or “Hi Handsome King!” while walking down the street. Most importantly, she knew and loved God. She believed that the hardships of this world would conclude and she would one day meet The Creator who would surround her with the deep, all-encompassing love that she so deserved and needed.

.

On Monday, October 6th, 2025, Monica closed her eyes on this earth for the final time. When she opened them next, she was in the presence of the love she sought. She is now covered by the warmth of a merciful God who loved her then and loves her now. With this, we rejoice and know that any earthly suffering she may have endured, is no more.

Monica is proceeded in death by her brother, Sheldon Alexander. She leaves behind her aforementioned children, parents and siblings. She also leaves behind 3 cherished grandchildren: Amina Ahmed, Myair Gotay, and Kaseem Ahmed,1 daughter in law: Tatiana Gotay and a host of cherished nieces and nephews including, Jacqueline Gotay with whom she shared a very special bond.
