Minetta Jones Obituary

Minnetta Louise Jones passed away on December 8, 2023, at her home in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Minnetta was born on December 10, 1952, at St. John’s Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. She began her education at Our Lady of Victory in Brooklyn where she received First Holy Communion. From an early age she was a quick study and the life of the room, inside and beyond the classroom. In the 1960s she moved to Staten Island and attended IS 27 Anning S. Prall Intermediate School and graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1970. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Richmond College (now known as The College of Staten Island).

Minnetta welcomed her first child Lewatte in 1971, while continuing her studies at St. John’s University. She began her career at Seaview Hospital in Staten Island where she worked for nearly fifteen years. Being equally career-oriented and family-minded, when her parents moved to the Hampton Roads area in the 1980s, she soon followed.

Upon arriving in Virginia, she became employed within the Sentara Hospital System in Portsmouth. From there, she accepted a position as a Quality Assurance Specialist for the Community Services Board of Chesapeake, from 2002 until her retirement in 2020. During her time with CSB of Chesapeake, she was truly an integral part of the agency. Her hard work and no-nonsense attitude were only outdone by her compassion and ability to truly connect with others. She was unabashedly direct, and often used her bravery and confidence to speak up for others who might not feel empowered to do so themselves. Upon retirement, Minnetta thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her many close friends. Minnetta was also dedicated to the care of her aging mother.

Minnetta’s circle was wider than most everyone who met her became a part of her community.

She made fast friends at work, church, wherever she dipped her toes. Aside from her sharp fashion sense, she was a lifelong patron of the arts she loved Broadway shows and was always reading a new book. She was also a creative problem solver, avid learner, and relentlessly resourceful. She instilled these virtues in everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Minnetta was steadfast in her faith and a dedicated Catholic. She was a longtime parishioner of The Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Norfolk, VA. Notably, she led the Altar Server Ministry for many years.

She is survived by her three children: Lewatte Roberson, William Jones Jr. (Haila), and Sylvia Jones (Agata); her grandchildren, Addilyn and Amory Jones; her mother, Sylvia Anderson; her brothers Welton “Skippy” Williams (Gwendolyn), Charles Anderson, Jr. (Selina) and Robert Anderson (Avion); her late brother Gregory’s wife London Williams; her nieces, Larniece, Larwanda, Nichelle, Donielle, Diamond Minnetta, Kerisma, Eva, Lilah, Leah, Raegan; and her nephews, Money, Joshua, Antonn, Noah, Elijah, Dominique, Asa and Donovan and many other nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

She is predeceased by her grandparents Robert Tucker and Australia Wilson; her late husband, William Bernard Jones Sr.; her brother, Gregory Williams; the late Charles Anderson, Sr., who lovingly nurtured and guided her, and Willie Welton Williams, her biological father.

She will be greatly missed by her life-long close friends Gail, Edith, Nelly, and Michelle. She will also be greatly missed by her vast extended family. She leaves a lasting impression on all those who knew her.
