Michael Dawson, beloved son, brother, uncle, godfather, and friend, passed away June 26, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of generosity, loyalty, and love. Born September 20, 1956 in Deerfield Beach, Florida, and raised in New Brighton, Staten Island, Michael’s life was rooted in community, family, and service.
During high school, Michael was selected to attend the prestigious Phillips Academy for a semester—an opportunity granted to a few outstanding students. He later graduated from Harlem Preparatory School and went on to serve honorably for six years in the U.S. Navy, including assignments aboard a nuclear submarine and the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. His military service exemplified the discipline and dedication that defined his character.
Michael built a successful career as an electrician with the NYC Housing Authority, where he mentored many and worked with humility and pride. He gave freely—financially, emotionally, and with his time—always without asking for anything in return.
He loved music, especially classic R&B, with Jackie Wilson, Stevie Wonder, and Earth, Wind & Fire filling his playlists. He was also a thoughtful reader, fascinated by religion, politics, and philosophy, and had a remarkable memory for facts and ideas. Conversations with him were full of insight—and colorful language.
Proceeded by his father, Michael is survived by his mother, Rozena Dawson, Staten Island; siblings Edna Greenwich, Staten Island, Raymond Dawson, Xenia, OH, Gertrude Dawson, Seattle WA, Musa Abdusshakur, Xenia OH, LaRay Dawson, Austin TX,
Stephen Dawson, Fredericksburg VA, Gloria Dawson, Xenia OH,
Stephanie Russell, Staten Island NY, Alfred Dawson, Columbus OH, and Matthew Dawson, Xenia OH; his goddaughter Liz Sims and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends including Kevin Sims and Robin Bell.
Michael lived without pretense and loved without condition. His humor, intellect, and boundless generosity will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
