Melissa Brooks also know as Millz or Chosen, passed away on March 8, 2025, at 12:50 AM at SIUH (Staten Island University Hospital) in Staten Island, NY, after bravely battling Stage 3 ovarian cancer and kidney disease. She was 43 years old.
Melissa was born on May 11, 1981, at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, New York, to her loving mother Clara Haynes.
She is survived by her six beautiful children: David, Elijah, Asahney, Gregory, Chance, and Mitchell.
Millz was known for her strength, loyalty, and unstoppable spirit. She always held it down—no matter what. Her passion was driving; it was more than a skill, it was her calling. As one of Staten Island's first female drivers, she built a reputation for dependability, and people would request her by name. She could get you anywhere, anytime, no questions asked.
She loved to cook, smoke, and vibe to music. Millz lit up every room she entered—she was kind, loving, and truly the life of the party. Her energy, laughter, and presence made her unforgettable.
Chosen was also deeply involved in the Staten Island social scene. She served as Vice President of the Vander Veer Social Club, founded by Leah aka Luscious. She was the second in command, always ready to step up and support her people. When times were hard, Chosen was the one you called. Her favorite people to ride out with included Beano, Kim (Boon Keke), Kareem (Knowledge), and many others.
Melissa is survived by her mother Clara Haynes/Moore, and her stepfather Alonzo Moore of Staten Island. She also leaves behind her siblings: Jerry Pastrana, Jasmine Gray, Rodneka Gray, and Alonzo Moore; her uncles: John Hickson and Clarence Hickson; her aunts: Lisa, Arelis, and Ana; and her cousins: Gladys, Jeaizel, Skyla, and Leah. She will be especially missed by her niece Jaycee, and nephews Isaiah and Joey.
She is also remembered by the fathers of her children, Gregory Reynolds and Larry Rogers, who stood strong with her throughout.
Her best friends—Moe, Fam, Barbara, Leah, Kim, and countless others—were a vital part of her journey. There are too many names to list, but each of you meant something real to her. If your name isn’t here, please know: Melissa truly loved you all
