John Wilkerson, Jr

In Loving Memory of John Wilkerson Jr:

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4) The trumpet sound has called him up to eternity with The Lord Jesus Christ, where he will put on his robe and tell the story about how he made it over! Our beloved John has made it home. 

John Wilkerson Jr. was the son of Bessie Wilkerson (neé Thomas) and John Wilkerson Sr. He was born in Fairfield, Alabama on October 28th 1956. The family later moved to Staten Island, NY, where John would remain as a lifelong resident. 

A graduate of Mckee High School, John, aka “Big John,” was known for his charismatic personality, baritone voice, a jovial smile that could light up a room, his signature stutter as he said “Uh, uh, uh”, and moderate sense of humor. Built tall and athletic, John was always willing and ready to help anyone he saw in need and all who knew him. Of course, nothing set the tone more for John like a good plate of home cooked food (or two, or three!) while watching his favorite westerns or action films. Food and John were synonymous and shared a special bond. 

John loved bike riding and once openly vocalized his dream of riding a bike all the way down to Florida, around his late 50s! He also enjoyed walking. He had a cool, strong stride that was well-known. Urban legend says he walked from Brooklyn to Staten Island on many occasions. Jesus walked and so did John. John had a very artistic side. In letters, he enjoyed drawing portraits, illustrating animals and homes, and even had a hidden talent for sculpting. 

On Thursday, June 18, 2020, John was called to meet the Lord. He is survived by three daughters: Nicole Wilkerson Jackson-Heard, Melanie Wilkerson, and Michelene Wilkerson; three grandchildren; two sisters: Gloria Fox and Regina Reddish; three nieces and three nephews; his former partner, Lorraine Fischer, and numerous relatives and friends who loved him. Truly he will be missed until we see him on the other side.
