Iyana Caldwell was born on August 23, 1978, to the late Carrie Caldwell and Johnnie Brown in Brooklyn, New York. Iyana was a beautiful baby girl who brought sunshine to those who knew her. Iyana was educated in New York City Public Schools. Upon her departure from high school, Iyana relished the adventures associated with everyday living. She was a risk-taker and began living life by her own terms.
Throughout Iyana’s life, she believed in the importance of asserting her strong convictions about pivotal topics of interest and daily events affecting her life or the lives of her loved ones and friends. She possessed a courageous personality and often challenged the status quo of societal norms. Conversely, when Iyana was in the presence of her loved ones, she was authentic, humorous, compassionate, and cordial. Iyana’s presence filled any room with humor and love that will never be forgotten.
During the time of Iyana’s early childhood and adolescence years, she lived in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York. At the approximate age of seventeen, Iyana and her family relocated to Staten Island, New York. During this transition, she became popular among her peers and helpful to the residents within her community. She ran errands for the elderly; engaged in friendly conversations with adults; and developed friendships with the employees within the Latino community.
Iyana did not formally attend a school of higher education. However, Iyana explored college campuses and other educational institutions where she interacted with scholars and relished cultural, historical, and intellectual conversations with others. These conversations and experiences helped to prepare her for the journey of motherhood.
Motherhood was one of Iyana’s significant achievements in life. Iyana gave birth to six beautiful children (five girls and one boy). Iyana made the sacrifice of ensuring that her children would be secured in the home of her family. She desired for her children to be reared with family so they could experience good nourishment, strong relationships, love, guidance, and above all, a strong spiritual foundation that would intensify their relationship with God. It was her vision that with strong family ties, a spiritual connection, good friendships, morals, values, and hard work, her children would be content with life and embrace every opportunity to pursue their dreams. Iyana leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication to her children.
To this end, “it is with heavy hearts, that we say farewell to Iyana, whose spirit will always shine brightly in our lives.” Iyana is survived by: Daughters: Ronette, Kari, Sophia, Yakima II, Egypt; Son: Shamar; Brother: Willie; Sisters: Jodiette, and Tobiette (Twins), Yakima I, Shaneeda, Pamela; Sister-in-Law: Gwen; Niece: Danasia, Nephews: Malik, Dominque & Kylik. Great Nephews: Kiyan, and Kayden. In addition, Iyana leaves to mourn other relatives and friends. Each family member and friend are priceless to Iyana’s legacy.
