Iris Denise Gilbert, fondly known to all as “Niecey”, entered her life on February 13, 1965,5 to Eddie Joe Smith and the late Juanita Green in Augusta, Georgia. On Saturday, October 22, 2022, Neicey departed this life suddenly and definitely too soon.

A kind, loving and gentle soul, Niecey was raised in Staten Island where she attended P.S. 18 Elementary School and graduated from Port Richmond High School. She attended several churches in the community.

Niecey was a people person, loved everybody and was an amazing babysitter especially for her family. She loved all the kids and they all loved her.  They could do no wrong, she just wanted them to be safe. 

She was known to be helpful to family, seniors, friends and coworkers and total strangers.

Niecey was employed for over 20 years at various parks and recreation centers on Staten Island. 

Niecey loved music (especially Janet Jackson), dancing, having fun, and working in the community, reading the Staten Island Advance, New York Post and Daily News.  Niecey was famous for carrying bags wherever she went, whether it was paper or plastic shopping bags. That was her hobby…” collecting and accumulating.” She was “The Bag Lady”.

Niecey loved fried chicken, eggplant, and potato salad.

You will often hear her two famous quotes “I’m taking one day at a time” and “Take it easy you will get there.”

Niecey is survived by her brother Rashon, (Bubba); aunts Eula Martin, Mary Wright, Bertha Smith, Diane Smith, and Marie Smith; uncles Larry Gilbert, David Smith, and Barry Smith; and a host of cousins and friends.

Niecey had a special place in her heart for her loving aunt Eula Martin and devoted cousin Helen (Glo) McCarroll.

Niecey’s family truly loved her, and she will be missed. However, she is at peace now with her mom, whom she missed very much. She’s now gone to glory, no more worries, pain or sickness.
