Gary Cherry, Sr, son of the late Evora (Cherry)Gooden and Bernard Moore was born on January 27, 1964 in Harlem, New York City. He was a dedicated employee of the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority and considered a popular member of the Stapleton community on Staten Island, where he raised his family.
He was united in holy matrimony to Odette L. Cherry on Dec 7, 1983. This union was blessed with four children. Gary is survived by his wife Odette , his children Gary Jr., Robert, Evora, and Lawrence. He was a beloved "Pop Boogie" to his grandchildren, Chantell, Elijah, and Premiere. Gary is also survived by his siblings, Ira, Andrew, Jeanette, and Jeffrey.
Stemmed from his love for travel and service, he was a true master of motor vehicles, performing well in every aspect of his Commercial Driver's License. He was able to execute jobs from heavy equipment operator, commercial coach operator, and lastly NYC Subway conductor, a profession that he truly loved, as it provided him the opportunity to serve the community, city, and state in which he was born and raised. He was a resilient man with the drive and dedication to overcome many a situation. He defeated addiction for over 20 years and was active in the Narcotic and Alcoholics Anonymous community, serving as a sponsor to many, and an inspiration for all.
He was a devoted father who enjoyed life! Gary was often considered the "life of the party." He was a spiritual man with a deep role in the Masonic community. Known widely as the "Father of the Block," he mentored many of the youth around him to excel in their personal and professional lives.
