Evelyn Davis Obituary

On Tuesday June 9th, 2026, Evelyn a faithful servant of the Most High God transitioned into
her spiritual adventure in the afterlife. She was 73 years young...

On Thursday March 5th, 1953 the City of Bayonne was blessed with an ‘earthly angel’, Evelyn
Davis. She was born in Bayonne Hospital to the proud parents of Annie Mae (Parham) Davis
and John Henry Davis. She was the first born of six children, five daughters and one son.
In 1964 the family relocated to Staten Island where she attended PS#16, JHS#49, and went
on to graduate from Curtis High School. Evelyn’s educational journey began in the NJ school
system which included Bayonne and Jersey City. Then continuing her college education and
certifications through Staten Island College where she attained her degrees.
With a strong desire to help and work with others Evelyn sought employment in the health
care field. This led her to The Willowbrook State School (Department of Mental Health)
where she was employed for many years. Here she cared for the adults and children with
intellectual disabilities which included handicapped, behavioral, and orphaned
individuals. Willowbrook State School eventually closed their doors. As a result, Evelyn
sought and gained employment with the Island Family Inn, where she educated and helped
the homeless, single-parent families, children, and battered women.

In later years, she was also employed by NYCHA (New York City Housing Authority) where
she continued helping others in her community as a GED teacher. She was also apart of
NYCHA’s Tenant Association in Stapleton Housing. Evelyn was a big part of NYCHA’s
community planning and outreach. Both Geraldine Parker and Evelyn Davis (the ‘sista duo’)
helped revive the community within Stapleton Housing and became a model for other city
housing facilities. Evelyn Davis enjoyed collaborating with others, and working behind the
scenes, so others could enjoy shining in the spotlight.

Evelyn was a faithful member of ‘The St. Paul’s AF Church of Giving Grace’ for many years
under the leadership of Elder Christine Gorham. She also started a ‘NYC Summer Food
Program’ and other activities for the local community, within the church. She was also
instrumental in assisting Elder Alice Brown in connecting with CTV Television of Staten
Island. In August of 2017 they traveled together and attended producer classes.
Evelyn Davis did a lot for her community, which is impossible to list here. Her positive
influence will be remembered for years to come. She was a great example of how the Most
High uses the humblest and meekest to do mighty works with lasting and profound impact.
Evelyn was preceded in death by both parents, two sister’s: Martha Hyman and Geraldine
Parker (Elder Philip Parker’s wife). She leaves her two sons to cherish her memories, both
of whom she loved very much, Anthony Miles of Staten Island, and Roosevelt Arrindell (wife
Tressie & son RJ) of New Jersey. She also leaves behind her three sisters: Ereline Davis and
Bette Russell of Staten Island and Hattie Miles (Timothy Miles’s wife) of North Carolina, two
brothers, John Davis of North Carolina and Arthur Bratley of Virginia, Twenty-three
grandchildren, host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
