Doris Glenda Long, 86, affectionately known as "Dot" to her family and friends, native of North Carolina and longtime resident of Staten Island, New York, was called home on April 23, 2023.

Born to Mary Prichard-Long and Arthur Long Sr. on May 28, 1936, in Washington, NC, she was raised in a loving home alongside her four sisters, Ethel, Mary, Rena, and Eleanor, and her brother Arthur, Jr.

Doris was a natural-born leader who lent her powerful voice to advocate for hotel workers' rights. A respected member of the Hotel Trades Council, Local 9, AFL-CIO, she made waves as a fierce union delegate who notably stood her ground at a picket line for over four years of the lockout through rain, snow, and heat, earning a tremendous win for her fellow workers. Doris retired from the former Staten Island Hotel after over 30 years of service. She was strong, charismatic, and generous to a fault, and she was always ready to lend a helping hand or an attentive ear to those in need. Her impeccable wit, kindness, and infectious laughter will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A beloved mother, Doris was preceded in death by her son Gerald Long and daughter Michelle Wilson. She is survived by her son, Christopher Long; sisters, Mary Odehnal, Evangelist Rena Long, and Eleanor Long; grandson Gerald Long, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Doris is leaving behind an enduring legacy remembered by the countless lives she touched and the generational impact she made in her community. She will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her.

Our hearts are heavy at the loss of our matriarch, but the warmth of the outpouring of love and uplifting messages received in the name of someone we loved so dearly, brings the comfort we need during this difficult time. On behalf of the Long family, we thank you for this love and support.

As a lung cancer survivor, Doris was committed to spreading awareness of the devastating impact cancer has on children and their families. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in honor of Doris G. Long.

Should you wish to donate, please send a check or money order to ALSAC/St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
