Denise Bonita Boyd, affectionately known as “Niecy,” was born on May 18, 1957, in Staten Island, NY, to Olga H. Boyd and her stepfather Robert C. Brown. She was raised in New Brighton alongside her beloved twin sister, the late Michelle B. Boyd.
Denise was educated in the New York City public school system, attending P.S. 40, I.S. 49, and graduating from Curtis High School. She later earned her bachelor’s degree in Human Services and a master’s in Social Work.
Her passion for helping others was evident throughout her career. Denise dedicated 34 years to the Staten Island DDSO and over 20 years to AHRC, advocating for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She was a fearless voice and devoted advocate for the Mariners Harbor community, known for her compassion, commitment, and leadership. Denise uplifted those around her—speaking life, standing for justice, and serving selflessly, even at the expense of her own peace.
Outside of work, Denise enjoyed traveling, shopping, gardening, music, caring for animals, decorating for the holidays, and hosting loved ones. She was deeply devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren, and was truly the glue that held everyone together. Her warmth, humor, and unforgettable laugh left a lasting mark on everyone she met.
Denise was preceded in death by her nephew Damon Boyd and her cherished granddaughter Keyara Crosby, both she loved deeply. She leaves behind her fiancé Sean Douglass; her children, Derrick and Lakia Boyd; her grandchildren, Janicsa Boyd, Maya Boyd, Tiara Crosby, Lanise Porto, Adalyah Green, and Jayla Ivory; her niece Tina Jones and nephew Darren Boyd; siblings Debra Simmons, Timothy Cheatham, Veronica Black, Kenneth Cheatham, Wilbert Boyd, Kathleen Cheatham, Thomas Cheatham; and a host of cousins, friends, and extended family. She was loved by many and respected by all—and her legacy lives on through them.
