Anibal Ayala Nuñez Jr., 66, peacefully left this earthly life on January 12, 2026, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital after bravely battling Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Born on March 23, 1959, in Harlem, New York, Anibal was shaped by the rhythm and resilience of Harlem, Spanish Harlem, Washington Heights, and Brooklyn—places he carried with him always; in his style, his cadence, his confidence, and his unmistakable flair. Rooted in deep Puerto Rican heritage and raised among strong, hardworking families, Anibal grew up understanding the value of perseverance, community, and showing up for one another.

Life did not unfold in a straight line for Anibal, and he never pretended it did. Reinvention was one of his greatest gifts! He believed deeply in second—and even third—chances, because he lived them himself. After navigating personal challenges, Anibal dedicated much of his life to service, using his lived experience to help others find their way forward.

As a substance abuse and HIV counselor, he guided people with empathy, honesty, and compassion—never from judgment, but from understanding. His heart was especially open to those often overlooked, and his work reflected his belief that everyone deserves dignity and opportunity.

Anibal later followed another passion and earned his certification in culinary arts from Star Academy in New York City. Cooking became yet another way he gave back. Known affectionately as “Chef Nez,” he worked in corporate kitchens, soup kitchens, and community spaces throughout New York City, ensuring people were not only fed, but cared for. In his final role, Anibal worked at THE INN supporting immigrants seeking shelter, where he partnered with local restaurants to provide warm, nourishing meals—believing deeply that comfort, equality, and respect are human rights.

A man of conversation, connection, and presence, Anibal was lovingly nicknamed “Talkin-Teeth” by his grandmother Maggie Downing-Clowney (“Nana”), who adored him. He loved to talk, to laugh, and to make people feel seen. His generosity was quiet but constant, his opinions strong, and his beliefs firmly rooted in humanity. Family—both by blood and by choice—was everything to him. Even when life grew complicated, Anibal remained the thread that held people together, always knowing where and how to find you.

Above all, Anibal was a devoted father who loved deeply and fiercely. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched, the meals he shared, the guidance he offered, and the belief he never let go of: that people deserve compassion, grace, and room to grow.

Anibal shared a deep and enduring love with his former wife, Maritza Senecharles, whose place in his heart remained significant throughout his life. He also found profound joy in his youngest daughter, Elena, whose life brought him a sense of renewal. Elena’s mother, Naomi Farley, remained a supportive and caring presence, and Anibal deeply appreciated the partnership they shared in raising their child.

Anibal Ayala Nuñez Jr. is survived by his children: Nyomi Nuñez, Anibal Ayala Nuñez III, Erika Nuñez, and Ruth Elena Farley; as well as his beloved bonus daughters, Danielle Senecharles and Jazmine Devers.

He is also survived by his siblings: Denise (DeeDee) Downing; Dorien Nuñez ; Jasmine Nuñez-Eaddy; Terrance Green; Linda Stallings ; Michelle Crowder; William “Man” Yancy; and his bonus cousins Jose Oaks and Joiava Criss.

Anibal was a proud grandfather to Joshua and Giovanni Nuñez, Graison A. Nuñez, and others he held close in his heart; a loving uncle to Iylona Hardy, Irique Johnson, Freedom, Serenity and Justice Eaddy, and many other nieces and nephews; and is remembered fondly by a wide circle of cousins, extended family, and dear friends whose lives were made richer by knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosalie Miles Nuñez; his father, Anibal Ayala Nuñez Sr.; his brother, Lamont Green; his niece, Asia Nuñez; and the love of his life, Juliette “Kim” Freeman.
