Patrick Lewis was born on September 22, 1946, in the Bronx, New York. He was the second of Gertrude and Albert Lewis Sr.'s four children, preceded by his brother Albert and followed by his brother Michael and sister Janet, In 1947, the family moved to the Astoria Housing Project, on the water's edge at the very end of Astoria Boulevard. It was in Astoria that Pat spent some of the most memorable days of his life. It here that he acquired a couple of nick names. To his siblings, close family and friends he known as Hump (a gentle giant from the Joe Palooka comic strip) and as Shed to those he competed with on the basketball court (a reference to Nevil Shed a pro baller from the early sixties). Hump's fond memories of life in Astoria can be seen in the excerpt from one of his, yet to be published poems, on the reverse of your program.
Pat attended the neighborhood public schools PS 9, PS 171, JHS 126 and Long Island City High School. In June 1966, a couple of years out of High School, he received the dreaded letter from his Uncle Sam inducting him into the Army where he served as an MP in Korea. Upon completing his tour of duty he decided to further his education and attended NYU where he received his BA in Business Administration with high honors (Summa cum laude). He began his professional career on Wall St. working for Bankers Trust Co. along with his brother Al and cousin Lloyd. He then moved on to the insurance industry which afforded him the opportunity to work in various locations across the nation, California being his first stop. As he began to climb the corporate ladder he also began to feel the pull of family and friends and began to work his way back to the east coast stopping in Texas, Missouri, Delaware and finally Pennsylvania.
Pat became an accomplished pool shooter and joined a competitive league while in Delaware where his team won several tournaments and continued his participation in this sport when he relocated to Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania. Together with his participation in this sport, Pat was also a lover of music and spent hours listening to music and putting together CD's for family and friends. Never one to remain idle, after his retirement from Cigna he began to work as a volunteer for the Delaware County Literacy Council, where he taught adult students how to read. As if that wasn't enough for a retiree, he also drove for Uber in his spare time. All this while writing poetry which he was in the process of getting published.
Patrick is survived by his brother Albert, his Aunts Dorothy, his nieces Monique, Darrel and Janet and his sisters-in-law Alice, Marguerite, Connie, Annie Louise, Pat and his brothers-in-law Malcom and Bobbie together with a host of cousins and more distant relations.
Hump will always be remembered for his love of family and his ceaseless efforts to make this world better. Gone, but not forgotten.
