Political Life

A natural born politician and a ‘young pioneer’ from her university days in the late 60’s to early 70’s, her retirement from academics in 1991 also led to the rejuvenation of this passion which would set the ball rolling for many memorable events.

Forging a strong affiliation with members and especially the founder of the erstwhile Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC), and eventually the 1st president of the 4th republic of Ghana under the newly formed National Democratic Congress, H.E Jerry John Rawlings and 1st lady H. E. Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, Georgina proved her mettle as a staunch and trust worthy supporter and colleague member of the party.

She was actively involved in reforms and policy making and conducted her affairs within the party under the strictest confidentiality, ensuring that all operations were executed in the utmost interest of the party and the nation as a whole.  

Being a young pioneer in her youth and known for her inherent socialist convictions and ideals, Georgina’s path soon crossed over to the then People’s Convention Party (PCP) now Convention People’s Party (CPP) as General Secretary for the CPP-Ultra, a pressure group within the party.  Her continuous calls for reforms aimed at resuscitating the ailing Convention Peoples Party would be a platform to formally launch her campaign as a Presidential Aspirant; her aim among other things, to effectively change educational policies, revamp the healthcare system and ensure natural resource optimization so as to minimize the country’s reliance on foreign aid and loans. 

All intentions well and good, Georgina’s campaign took off and within a short time frame had garnered much needed support, albeit there was more to do. A piece carried in the ‘public agenda’ publication on June 3rd to 9th 1996, just before a CPP National Congress, stated “Ama Ohene, the only female candidate has tried in a short while to promote an agenda encompassing the interests of women, children and the unemployed.  She is very articulate but many see her as a politician who is still learning the art of national politicking.  Quite a sizeable number of women will be attending the congress and should they decide to vote en bloc for a female candidate, Ohene will be reaping a bountiful harvest”.  

As with any other project or campaign one’s financial prowess would determine its success or otherwise.  Inadequate funding among other things eventually curtailed Georgina’s presidential aspirations and got her rethinking her place in the party.  Subsequently, she escaped from the hostilities and infighting of a party still struggling to make headway in a typical bi-partisan country; and made it back into the USA to start afresh whilst still keeping her political network of friends and soon struck an alliance with their diasporan links here in the US.

Life back in the USA

Georgina was re-united with her second daughter Efua in 2003 and settled into a practically quite but active life campaigning for humanitarian groups whose vision she shared, the most significant ones being on the Obama and Clinton campaigns.  She made inroads unto social media platforms as well, a typical one being her campaign against nudity and perverse living amongst the youth which was aired on facebook.  Evangelism still a very part of her, Georgina would make trips to foreign lands to preach the gospel and win souls for Christ.  Whilst this went on for a number of years, Georgina found lecturing engagements and became an adjunct professor with the City University of New York (CUNY).

Always full of surprises, Georgina did a one eighty in 2011 when on a whim, she returned to Ghana supposedly for a short stay but in actual fact, she was just home sick but too mischievous to disclose her intentions saving it for later.  After reuniting with her eldest daughter Nana Dwukoa and her family and old friends, she embarked on a 10 month lecturing stint at the Ashesi University College and GIMPA and returned to the USA to regroup for a final come back to her beloved homeland. 

Ama Adumea was rarely ill and from her early days of tennis, javelin and other sporting activities, she had kept herself pretty well and healthy.  A few minor incidents though from 2014 culminated into a bit of a back problem taking a toll on her lecturing schedule at Borough of Manhattan College (BMCC).  This finally sent her into hospital for a corrective procedure; a successful one.  So why are we here today looking forlornly at her still face?  Her sudden passing is indeed a big blow, shocking and definitely unbelievable; still so young and a fresh ‘grandma’ at just 66 years, we expected many more years ahead with you and it is hard to grapple with the fact that you are gone.

This is a woman with many colorful parts, one about whom you could probably read and never finish. Georgina, Ama Adumea, Maa, Momee, Ms Ohene, Nurse Talata! ….you will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.  

May her lovely soul gently rest in the Saviour’s arms until we all reunite.  Amen.
